Summer Shakespeare Intensive

Class Detail

Join Antaeus Company members and performers for an 8-week Shakespeare intensive. This cohesive course will provide students with two weeks of instruction with each moderator. Each student will work on two monologues during this course.

“Activate the Language” with Bernard K. Addison (7/17, 7/24)

During the first unit of the Shakespeare Intensive, students will learn the tools needed to activate Shakespeare’s language so they can make wholly personal and stage worthy choices. Using Cicely Berry-inspired text-in-hand, students will discover meter, rhythm, and the muscularity of language – the form. From there, students will begin to discover the freedom of exploration, personalization and spontaneity within the form.

“The Text as a Building Block” with Tony Amendola (7/31, 8/7)

But don’t forget to go back to the text! During the second unit of the Shakespeare Intensive, students will approach Shakespeare’s verse and prose as building blocks – leading to clarity and meaning. Students will then marry that understanding to our more modern concerns of characterization. This unit will also include discussions about acting in and directing Shakespeare’s plays.

“Storytelling Through Text” with Abigail Marks (8/14, 8/21)

During the third unit of the Shakespeare Intensive, students will discover how to synthesize  meter, operative words, and rhetorical structure. With these new technical skills, students will then learn to identify and tell a clear story. This unit also includes practical instruction on using Shakespearean text in auditions.

“Breaking the Rhythm” with Ann Noble (8/28, 9/4)

In the final unit of the Shakespeare Intensive, students will discover how to take all the “rules” they’ve learned about the text, the meter, the poetry, the meaning, and make it their own, i.e. how to NOT be “trapped” by the text! This unit serves as the culmination of the student’s exploration of Shakespeare.

The moderators of the Summer Shakespeare Intensive include three Antaeus Company Members and one frequent Antaeus guest artist. All four have performed extensively in Film, TV, and on Southern Californian stages.
