BACKGROUND

Antaeus Theatre Company is an actor-driven theater company that explores and produces timely and timeless works, grounded in our passion for the Classics. We illuminate diverse human experiences through performance, training and outreach. We believe in the transformative power of live theater.

Antaeus is located at the Kiki & David Gindler Performing Arts Center in Downtown Glendale, CA. The center includes an 80-seat theater, a reconfigurable 36-seat black box space, and a theater library.

After developing a strategic plan immediately prior to the pandemic, Antaeus is embarking on a new strategic planning process to respond to new challenges impacting non-profit theatres across the country. Antaeus also looks forward to celebrating its 35th Anniversary in 2026, a historical milestone that provides synergy with our strategic planning process and presents a unique opportunity to elevate fundraising, both short- and long- term.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Executive Director (ED) serves as Chief Executive Officer of Antaeus and also serves as an ex-officio member of the Board and all standing Board committees. The ED reports to and is responsible to the Board of Directors for all aspects of the operation of the theater, including financial management, supervision and professional development of staff, fundraising and donor stewardship, community relations/outreach, and implementation of Board policies.

In partnership with the Artistic Director (AD), the ED provides leadership and strategic direction for the organization. The ED works closely with the Board, the Chairs of each committee, and staff to accomplish the goals, values, and mission of Antaeus, all in furtherance of the organization’s Guiding Values.

The primary responsibilities of the ED are as follows:

  • BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Establish and maintain a collaborative working relationship with the Board, including supporting the Board’s governance and fundraising functions; create an environment conducive to productive Board and committee meetings; contribute to the identification, recruitment and cultivation of new Board members and develop opportunities to further diversify the Board; partner with the AD and Board to develop and implement long-term strategic planning.
  • FINANCIAL: Oversee the financial health of the organization, including creating fiscally responsible budgets, creating and maintaining financial controls, monitoring cash flow; oversee all aspects of banking, insurance coverage/compliance, and the organization’s obligations under its building lease agreement; oversee and ensure compliance with all federal, state and local legal requirements, including oversight of annual audits, and filing of tax returns; oversee financial reporting to the board, including creating and presenting financial statements to the Board on a regular and periodic basis; develop, implement and monitor a plan for long-term financial sustainability including growing both contributed and earned income based on strategic plan goals.
  • FUNDRAISING: Work closely with the AD and Board to generate contributions through an overall strategy for year-over-year increased fundraising, including through the development, implementation, and oversight of capital campaigns; monitor fundraising progress against budget goals throughout the fiscal year; prepare fundraising reports to the Board on a regular and periodic basis; supervise fundraising activities by staff or other persons engaged by Antaeus to assist with fundraising, including overseeing grant applications and timely reporting to foundations; actively and regularly cultivate and solicit gifts from major donors, and generally oversee donor stewardship.
  • MARKETING: Promote Antaeus locally and nationally through well-conceived strategic and innovative marketing, branding, and public relations campaigns; oversee identifying and overseeing programs to increase attendance through promotion of subscriptions and increased single ticket sales.
  • STAFF LEADERSHIP: Effectively manage and supervise staff; create a positive and productive work environment for staff, including implementing regular staff performance reviews and providing staff with professional development opportunities; oversee staff policies and procedures and ensure compliance with applicable employment and labor laws; oversee and implement methods to increase equity, diversity, and inclusion at the staff level.
  • COMMUNITY PARTNERSHIPS: Maintain and strengthen existing community partnerships and build new relationships that strategically align with the organization’s mission and values, including ensuring that all community partnerships center the values of equity, diversity, inclusion and access.
  • ADVOCACY: In partnership with the AD, serve as a public face of the organization; represent Antaeus as its ambassador, advocate, and spokesperson to stakeholders both internally and externally, including the media, businesses and civic leaders, donors, company members, patrons, the general public, and both the local and national arts community.
  • STRATEGIC PLANNING: In partnership with the AD, develop a new strategic plan to shape organizational priorities, programs and financial planning over the long term, building upon Antaeus’s strong sense of identity, its unique mission as a member-driven classic theatre company, and its acclaimed programming history since moving to its home in Glendale in 2017.


QUALIFICATIONS

The ideal candidate will be a nonprofit leader, preferably with experience in theater or the performing arts, with a strong record of organizational management, financial oversight, and fundraising success. They should bring experience managing budgets of $1M or more, developing and executing strategic plans and comprehensive capital campaigns, and have a history of fostering an inclusive, collaborative culture. The candidate must demonstrate a proven ability to cultivate and steward donors, to successfully oversee staff and operations, and to partner effectively with a board. To succeed in this role, the candidate must have strong communication and organizational skills, a passion for theater, and a commitment to equity, diversity, inclusion, and accessibility. The candidate also must be proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and comfortable using Customer Relationship Management software.

POSITION SUMMARY

The Technical Director (TD) reports to and collaborates extensively with the Artistic Director, and works closely with the Operations Manager, to oversee all technical elements of productions, readings, and special events at Antaeus. This is a hands-on position that works with designers, directors, the technical crew, and the management team to make sure the technical elements of a show are completed safely, on time, on budget, and in accordance with the artistic vision of Antaeus Theatre Company. Key to the position is the ability to be organized, have extensive knowledge about technical theater, and should enjoy working with a diverse group of people. This is an onsite position, with flexibility to accommodate offsite activities, and will require occasional work in the evening and on the weekend.


Primary Responsibilities:

  • Estimate and track labor and material costs for productions and advise Antaeus leadership of the potential consequences of any proposed changes. This includes the ability to analyze and determine technical labor and supply budgets for productions; administer show budgets; track expenditures; purchase materials.
  • Communicate with personnel and contractors to coordinate activities and programs, resolve issues and conflicts and exchange information; communicate with and advise artists to assure the smooth running of performances and other events.
  • Review all designs to troubleshoot any early adjustments that need to be made in relation to practical application and financial feasibility based on budgets; work with the Creative Team to find solutions to technical problems and challenges.
  • Supervise all builds, changeovers, load-ins, light hangs, and strikes; take an active role as a carpenter, electrician, or otherwise as needed.
  • Maintain and promote a safe work environment by following and enforcing all safety regulations, providing safety equipment, training employees on safe practices, reporting incidents, managing record keeping, staying up-to-date on safety issues and advising on safety related policies.
  • Attend all production meetings, tech rehearsals, dress rehearsals, and previews for notes; responsible for reading show reports; responsible for daily repair and upkeep of all production design elements throughout the production’s entire run.
  • Evaluate, update and maintain soft goods, materials stock, tools, lighting, sound and video inventory; perform preventative maintenance and arrange for repairs as needed.
  • Ensure that all contractual obligations around technical needs are met for outside rentals.


Qualifications:

  • Any combination equivalent to: bachelor's degree in theater arts, theater production or related field and theater production experience.
  • Three years of experience in production management and/or technical theater.
  • Thorough knowledge of theatrical lighting, audio and wiring, as well as theatrical set carpentry and costume repair. 
  • Skilled in theater rigging with the ability to hang lights, scenery, drops and other equipment safely.
  • Experience preparing and overseeing budgets. Analyze and determine technical labor and supply budget.
  • Knowledge of theater terminology, union rules and other laws, rules and regulations regarding assigned activities.
  • Stage management procedures and production crew operations.
  • Interpersonal skills using tact, patience and courtesy.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills. Principles and practices of administration, supervision and training.
  • Operation of a computer and assigned software.
  • Appreciates and is enthusiastic about theater and the important role that cultural organizations play in the life of a vibrant community. Must be able to balance the many challenges inherent in working in a growing, fast-paced intimate theater environment.

TITLE: Overhire Carpenter

THE POSITION 

Antaeus Theatre Company seeks candidates for part-time Overhire Carpenter. This position is responsible for assisting with set construction, assembly, and maintenance. This position will be part-time and project-based as needed during productions. Approximately 10-20 hours a week during productions. 


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

● Install scenery on stage and complete scenic notes during the load-in, tech, and preview process. 

● Construct scenic elements out of wood, metal, and other materials. 

● Move scenery, lumber, and other items and materials around the theater.

● Must be comfortable climbing ladders and using tools on ladders 

● Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment by putting away tools and equipment after use, organizing materials and equipment, sweeping up dust and debris, and other related tasks.

● Maintain and promote a safe work environment by following safety regulations and alerting a supervisor of any safety issues. 

● Other duties as assigned 


EXPERIENCE & QUALIFICATIONS 

● Have a basic understanding with power and hand tools and how to work with them safely. 

● Be willing to learn and adapt to theatrical terminology for ease of communication.

TITLE: Master Electrician

THE POSITION 

Antaeus Theatre Company seeking a candidate for a part-time, seasonal Master Electrician. This position is responsible for overseeing Light Hang, Circuiting, Focus, Patching and Programming the Light Plot for each Antaeus Main Stage shows and Black Box events. Troubleshooting lighting instruments, hanging and organizing electrical cabling, and assembly and maintenance of theatrical lighting instruments. This position will be part-time and seasonal as needed during productions. Ability to troubleshoot pre-show issues over the phone with the production team as needed. Collaborate with the Technical Director on schedule, lighting issues, and production related needs. Respond to Lighting Designer requests. Approximately 10-20 hours a week during production Load-in and Tech weeks.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES 

● Oversees hang, circuit, focus and troubleshoot theatrical lighting equipment, including conventional, LED, and practical fixtures. 

● Troubleshooting and programming with an ETC ION 3000 Lighting consul.

● Circuiting a dual system of LED and Incandescent lights on a dimmer rack system.

● Install set and prop-mounted lights and wire practicals. Place cue, running, and work lights. 

● Communicate and collaborate with the technical director on schedule, lighting notes, and lighting designer requests. 

● Clean and maintain lighting equipment, cut gel, and replace lamps. 

● Move equipment and other materials around the theater as needed. 

● Must be comfortable climbing ladders, with and without lighting instruments in hand

● Maintain a clean, safe, and efficient work environment by putting away tools and equipment after use, keeping materials and equipment organized, running power cables neatly, and other related tasks.

● 1-3 years of experience and knowledge of troubleshooting and programming with an ETC ION 3000 Lighting consul. 

● 1-3 years of experience circuiting a dual system of LED lights and Incandescent on a dimmer rack system.

Actors

Company Membership:

All actors who meet either of the following criteria will be offered Company membership into Antaeus:

   • Performed in two Antaeus productions, or
   • Performed in one Antaeus production, and two Antaeus-produced readings

Casting:

Casting for productions is by invitation only, with preference given to current Antaeus Company members. We hold an open call to meet potential Guest Artists for future projects.
