As we reach the end of 2020, undoubtedly the strangest year I have lived through, I am struck by the feeling that, in spite of all the loss and hardship of these last few months, I am also grateful for other things.
When the shutdown happened in March, I had no way of knowing where we’d be today. I wouldn’t have wanted to imagine that the theater would be closed for this long, and even if I could have predicted it, I don’t think I would have been able to dream of all we would accomplish remotely in these last nine months. But thanks to the generosity of this community, we’ve been able to continue our work undaunted.
Not only that, but the support we’ve received has given us the resources to work in creative new ways. The Zip Code Plays: Los Angeles, our new original audio play series, has been an amazing success, reaching over 25,000 audiences all over the world in just its first few weeks online. Without the strength and security our community provided us – with donors stretching, giving extra, or giving early to help make up for all the cancelled ticket sales and other lost income we projected from the closure – we would never have had the opportunity to undertake this project.
We miss being with our community more than we can say, and we can’t wait to get back to that transformative, frenetic energy that only exists when people come together to create and share live theater in the same room. So if you can, we hope you’ll consider making a gift to help Antaeus finish this difficult, tumultuous year in a position of strength, ready to take on the challenges and new opportunities 2021 will bring, so that we can be ready to welcome you back as soon as it’s safe.
I want to invite you to read our 2020 Annual Report, and please know how deeply we appreciate everything this community helped us accomplish this year.
We wish you and your families a safe and happy holiday season, and we look forward to a better, brighter year to come.
