Offered in the Spring and Fall Semesters, The Classics is a ongoing series of master classes focusing on specific writers and genres of classical theater, taught by acclaimed Antaeus company members and guest moderators. Through exercises, text work, and scene study students will learn to develop their own unique approach to the classical canon. The final class will be a scene presentation open to invited guests and Antaeus company members. |
Moderated by Emily ChaseMondays, 1:30-5p beginning June 4th Class fee: $540 for 12 week session, $500 early bird discount (due by 5/28)* Class size: 18-20 ~ Open to actors of all ages We invite you to work with us on some steamy, scintillating and hilarious modern masterpieces. In this twelve-week class, we will explore great contemporary plays that feature one of the following classical elements: heightened speech, period style, and/or complex subject matter. Each month the class will focus on scene work from two complementary texts (Les Liaisons Dangereuses and Arcadia, for instance). As we work on language, voice and speech, scene analysis, and theatrical physicality, the class will function and feel like a professional rehearsal. |
Moderated by Elizabeth SwainMondays 7 – 10p beginning June 4th Class fee: $300 for 7 week session (due by 5/28)* Class size: 14 - 16 ~ Open to actors of all ages Shakespeare’s text is a gift to the actor who knows how to find the offered clues to performance. We will explore the text’s structure, its rhetorical devices, its verse, rhythm and sound; we will learn to trust the text as the source of what we need to know about character and action, within the context of Elizabethan culture and beliefs; then exercises will help us bring the text to stage life. Our goal is to give the actor a way of approaching any new piece of text as a preparation for the real business of acting Shakespeare. *Please note: Antaeus Academy does not offer refunds. If you are unable to complete a class for some reason, a reimbursement of class credit is available, good towards any future Antaeus class. |

The A2 Ensemble is the next generation of the Antaeus Company, a collective of upcoming professional actors dedicated to employing the classics to discuss contemporary topics, thereby challenging our definition of “classical theater.” They frequently participate in readings, workshops and master classes, as well as Antaeus mainstage productions. “A2ers” produce the Antaeus late night series “Last Call for Theater”. Membership is by invitation only. For more information on its members, please visit the a2 page. Next up for A2: “Shoestring Classics”: an outreach program designed to bring children’s classics into the classroom and community. Past ensemble work includes: The Nina Variations by Steven Dietz – an exploration of the final Nina/Treplev scene in The Seagull, Love’s Labour’s Lost – Shakespeare’s send-up of the study of love; The Typists – Murray Schisgal’s tragi-comic precursor to “The Office”; the Antaeus holiday favorite The Thin Man – a radio play version of Dashiell Hammett’s classic film noir; Schnitzler's love pageant, La Ronde and The Young Idea – a series of workshops and readings celebrating Noël Coward including Hay Fever, Peace In Our Time and Easy Virtue. Past casting director workshops include sessions with Nancy Foy, Bruce Newberg, Amy Lieberman and Joanne DeNaut. Recent master classes include “Contemporary British Classics” with Robert Egan, “Stylized Comedy” with Jessica Kubzansky and “Being Directed” with Cameron Watson. |
