In 2013, a collective known as The Kilroys formed in Los Angeles. Named after the iconic graffiti tag “Kilroy Was Here,” first left by WWII soldiers in unexpected places in order to make their presence known, these thirteen women advocate for gender equality in the American theater. No longer can theaters complain that they would love to produce more by women and transgender playwrights but they just can’t find the work. Now there is The List, designed to combat the systemic institutional bias against female and trans writers.
Four lists have been released since 2014, and 168 plays from those lists are now rumbling around the American theater. As of June of 2017, more than 100 productions of plays on The List have been mounted or announced. Through scene study and discussion, we will explore the work of the up-and-coming female and trans writers on the four lists. In our own way, we will hopefully start to change the world through advocacy, activism and art.
