After Shakespeare, Chekhov may be the most popular writer of all time. In his short 44 years, he managed to touch many with his work. Annie Baker, Christopher Durang, Michael Frayn, Brian Friel, Trevor Griffiths, David Hare, Jean-Claude van Itallie, Tracy Letts, David Mamet, Emily Mann, Donald Margulies, Aaron Posner, Sarah Ruhl, Neil Simon, Tom Stoppard, Tennessee Williams… some have adapted – some very freely – and some have even written all new works inspired by the Russian master. Through scene study, students will discover why a doctor/writer from Taganrog, who thought people would read his work for seven years after his death, is still being read & tinkered with 113 years later.
